The territory of Beaulieu-sur-Mer is integrated into two areas of great ecological value. Discover our treasures!

Pelagos Sanctuary

This protected marine area extends over 87,500 km2, within the Corso-Liguro-Provençal basin. In 1999, France, Italy and Monaco signed the Sanctuary agreements in Rome.

The aim of this zone is to protect cetaceans and their habitats from all causes of disturbance: pollution, accidental capture and injury, disturbance, etc.

It is estimated that between 1,000 and 3,000 fin whales, as well as around 25,000 blue and white dolphins, frequent this area in summer.

Natura 2000 area

The Natura 2000 site "Cap Ferrat", 100% marine, extends over nearly 9,000 ha facing the coastline of the cities of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Eze and Cap d'Ail. Among the 13 Natura 2000 sites spread over the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis, this area is the only marine site.

The Natura 2000 charter aims to pursue, develop and promote good practices favourable to the conservation of natural areas. It is a voluntary membership tool that allows signatories, whether they are professionals of the sea or practitioners of a leisure activity, to participate in the process, share common values and mark their commitment to the preservation of the natural heritage. This very attractive area, where many activities are developed, is home to marine ecosystems and an abundance of biodiversity. Five habitats of community interest (i.e. protected at European level) are present on the site, in particular the Posidonia meadow and the coralligenous biocenosis, and two species of community interest frequent the area: the Bottlenose dolphin and the Loggerhead turtle.
