The Beaulieu Lawn Tennis Club was created by Sir Blundell Maple, on land that belonged to him adjoining the Hotel Bristol. In 1921, the Beaulieu Lawn Tennis Club welcomed the "great" Suzanne Lenglen for a match as opponent to the Australian, Miss Ryan. Immediately after the First World War, the management of the Bristol organised "International Tennis Tournaments" which enjoyed a considerable reputation. The most prestigious tennis players faced one another in unforgettable encounters on exceptional clay courts. During the winters of 1947-48 the daily presence of King Gustav V of Sweden brought an extra touch of style to the already great prestige of this remarkable complex. Now open year round, the 8 clay tennis courts (including 6 lit) host major competitions each year including the I.T.F. Junior Grade 1 in April and the Senior tournament in March.
